About
As a designer, I strive to balance the familiar with the unexpected. I approach design from the perspective of a songwriter where I seek to build with the elements of cadence, melody, harmony, rhythm, contrast, tension, and release. I believe this approach possesses the opportunity to present viewers with designs that are relatable, yet surprising. Ultimately, I create to move and resonate.
The movement and resonance I aspire to create with my designs can be attributed in large part to the designers that influence my work. When seeking solutions to typographic and layout design problems, I often reference Piet Zwart, who activated seemingly ordinary forms and spaces into something with dynamic range. Peter Behrens is another historical figure that inspires a lot of what I like to create. Like Zwart, Behrens made the ordinary look extraordinary, especially with his industrial and commercial design. For example, I specifically look to his pioneering body of work when gathering insight into how to execute successful brand identity.
As a design professional, I gravitate toward the fields of motion graphics, multi-media, illustration, branding, logo development, packaging, and user interface design. And, while I may be drawn to these specific fields in regard to interests and practice, I don’t view design as only being confined to the visual realm. I believe design is ubiquitous and that there is opportunity to apply design principles and solutions toward most problems we face. I envision a space in which we not only produce good design, but craft a well-designed life.
